Throughout my career from trainee accountant through to finance director, I’ve witnessed first hand senior professionals nodding and sometimes even saying the right words (“we need to grow the balance sheet…”) but not really understanding what they or their finance team are talking about. And, too often, people are nervous to ask questions for fear of looking silly or incompetent.
Finance is far too important for that! It is the lifeblood of your organisation and a lack of understanding of key financial information can have serious consequences for the health of your business. So many companies could be saved on a daily basis if they just understood some of the absolute basics such as why and how to monitor cash flow and what the profit and loss account and balance sheet are actually showing them. All departments need to understand these fundamentals, too. If all your departments are healthy and performing, it stands to reason that your company will be, too!
